Quantized orbits in weakly coupled Belousov-Zhabotinsky reac- tors

چکیده
Abstract – Using numerical and experimental tools, we study the motion of two coupled spiral cores in a light-sensitive variant of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Each core resides on a separate two-dimensional domain, and is coupled to the other by light. When both spirals have the same sense of rotation, the cores are attracted to a circular trajectory with a diameter quantized in integer units of the spiral wave length λ. When the spirals have opposite senses of rotation, the cores are attracted towards different but parallel straight trajectories, separated by an integer multiple of λ/2. We present a model that explains this behavior as the result of a spiral wavefront-core interaction that produces a deterministic displacement of the core and a retardation of its phase.

Weakly and strongly coupled Belousov-Zhabotinsky patterns.
We investigate experimentally and numerically the synchronization of two-dimensional spiral wave patterns in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction due to point-to-point coupling of two separate domains. Different synchronization modalities appear depending on the coupling strength and the initial patterns in each domain. The behavior as a function of the coupling strength falls into two qualitative...
متن کاملAutocatalytic reaction on low - dimensional substrates
We discuss a model for the autocatalytic reaction A + B → 2A on substrates where the reactants perform a compact exploration of the space, i.e., on lattices whose spectral dimensioñ d is < 2. For finite systems, the total time τ for the reaction to end scales according to two different regimes, for high and low concentrations of reactants. The functional dependence of τ on the volume of the sub...
متن کاملA model for jumping and bubble waves in the Belousov–Zhabotinsky- aerosol OT system
We develop a four-variable model, based on the classic Field–Kőrös–Noyes mechanism for the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky BZ reaction, that describes recently discovered jumping waves and bubble waves in the BZ reaction in aerosol OT microemulsion and provides insight into their origins. Contrary to suggestions based on previous models, it appears that these phenomena can arise from interacti...

متن کاملIdentification of Excitable Media Using a Scalar Coupled Map Lattice Model
The identification problem for excitable media is investigated in this paper. A new scalar coupled map lattice (SCML) model is introduced and the orthogonal least squares algorithm is employed to determinate the structure of the SCML model and to estimate the associated parameters. A simulated pattern and a pattern observed directly from a real Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction are identified. The ...
